Side-Bi-Side Cells

Side-bi-Side cells

This Side-Bi-Side Cell has the common 9mm orifice diameter but its volumes are 2ml instead of the 3.4ml standard.

Valia-Chien Cell – generally the same as a Side-Bi-Side Cell except that there is an additional pinchclamp to hold the membrane in place.

Custom Cells

The researcher who purchased this cell requested an additional port for each cell half.

Amber Side-Bi-Side Cell with a 15mm diameter orifice and a 13-425 threaded joint for a septum cap on the right half. The 7/25 female joint on the left half is standard.

Valia-Chien cell with a spherical joint for performing corneal research. The clamp shown here is the standard #CC-09-FG Franz Cell Clamp.

This closeup view of two halves of a Valia-Chien Cell with spherical joint has dotted lines added to more clearly show the inner joint surfaces. This cell has a 3mm orifice diameter going through the 12mm diameter joint.

5mm unjacketed Side-Bi-Side cell. A pinchclamp is used for the flat ground joint that holds the membrane between the cell halves.

Unjacketed 9mm Side-Bi-Side cell with larger clamp.

This Side-Bi-Side has a 15mm orifice diameter, a flat flange joint, and 3.4ml volumes.

This specially customized Side-Bi-Side Cell is larger than a Side-Bi-Side Cell and smaller than a Super Cell. It has a 15mm orifice diameter and 34ml volumes.

This Side-Bi-Side Super Cell has a 30mm orifice diameter and each cell half has a 50ml volume.

This amber Side-Bi-Side Super Cell has a 40mm orifice diameter and 50ml volumes.

PermeGear makes three different classes of Side-Bi-Side Cells.  The smallest class includes the most common Side-Bi-Side Cells having orifice diameters from 5mm to 15mm. The medium size class has orifice diameters up to 25mm.  The largest class has orifice diameters between 15mm and 60mm.  In all classes of Side-Bi-Side Cells the volumes are dependent on orifice diameter and other factors.

With additional porting, these cells are well suited to iontophoresis work.  They are easily customized with additional porting, amberizing, etc.

When referring to Side-Bi-Side Cells, the word cell means both pieces of glass together. We supply our Side-Bi-Side Cells with stoppers and stir bars for both sides. Side-Bi-Side Cells do not come with Cell Clamps, they must be ordered separately.

After a membrane is placed between the cell halves, the Cell Clamp is placed around them. The adjusting knob is then gently tightened to hold the glass halves and membrane or device together. The assembly is then located over the stirring magnets of an H-Series Stirrer by placing the holes in the clamp over pins on the top of the unit.

There is another variety of Side-Bi-Side Cell known as a Valia-Chien Cell.  It is generally the same as a Side-Bi-Side Cell except that the surfaces of the joint are not the ends of the heating jackets.  The joint is like that of a Franz Cell with the joint’s halves being fused to the heating jackets.  An additional clamp holds the membrane in place. Valia-Chien Cells are available with o-ring, flat ground o-ring, or flat flange joints.

Please note that the wrap around Cell Clamp for a Valia-Chien Cell is not the same as the Cell Clamp for a Side-Bi-Side Cell and that clamps for one variety of cell will not work properly with the other cells. There are also different stirrers for each kind of cell as the center-to-center distance for the stirbars in a Side-Bi-Side Cell is 29mm and the corresponding distance in Valia-Chien Cell is 41mm. For corneal work the Valia-Chien Cell must be used because there is no practical option for a Side-Bi-Side Cell to have a spherical surface.

Also, if the heating jacket of a Side-Bi-Side Cell is removed, the Side-Bi-Side Cell becomes an unjacketed Valia-Chien Cell. This is because the clamping can no longer be done with the wrap around Side-Bi-Side Cell Clamp which uses the heating jackets to hold Side-Bi-Side Cell halves together.  Instead a pinch clamp for flat ground o-ring and o-ring joints, or a horsehoe clamps for flat flange joints, does the clamping.  Therefore, it you ask for a quotation for an unjacketed Side-Bi-Side Cell, you will receive a quotation for an unjacketed Valia-Chien Cell.

Ordering Information

Part numbers are made up of five 2-character codes separated by hyphens.  Additional codes may be added by PermeGear if the cell is customized with extra porting or other modifications.

  • 1st code is cell type: 5G is for a Side-Bi-Side Cell, 7G is for a Valia-Chien Cell
  • 2nd code is joint type: 00 is a flat joint with ground surfaces, 03 is for a spherical joint (for corneal work)
  • 3rd code is glass type: 00 is for clear glass, 01 is for amberized glass
  • 4th code is orifice diameter in millimeters, 05 through 60 and is class dependent
  • 5th code is the internal volume on either side of the joint
  • Examples
    • 5G-00-00-15-05 is for a clear 15mm cell with 5ml volumes
    • 5G-00-01-09-02 is for an amber 9mm cell with 2ml volumes
    • 7G-03-00-0918-06 is for a clear Valia-Chien Cell with a 9mm orifice, 18mm spherical diameter, and 6ml volumes

Typical Dimensions

The smallest class of Side-Bi-Side Cells has orifice diameters from 5mm to 15mm.  The smallest possible volume for either side is 1ml but that volume is not available for all orifice diameters.  The largest possible volume for the smallest class of Side-Bi-Side Cells is 10ml.

The medium size class of Side-Bi-Side Cells has orifice diameters up to 25mm.  The smallest possible volume for either side is 15ml but that volume is not available for all orifice diameters.  The largest possible volume for the medium size class of Side-Bi-Side Cells is 50ml.

The largest class of Side-Bi-Side Cells has orifice diameters up to 60mm.  The smallest possible volume for either side is 30ml but that volume is not available for all orifice diameters.  The largest possible volume for the largest size class of Side-Bi-Side Cells is 150ml.

The volumes on both sides of a Side-Bi-Side Cell are generally the same but do not have to be.

Valia-Chien Cells are available in orifice diameters up to 15mm like the smallest class of Side-Bi-Side Cells.  Volumes are available up to 8ml.  Most commonly, Valia-Chien Cells are ordered for corneal work and certain orifice diameters from 5mm to 12mm with corresponding spherical diameters of 12mm to 28mm are available.

Side-Bi-Side Cells and Valia-Chien Cells are most commonly ordered with heating jackets.  Both varieties of cells are available without heating jackets, we can provide volumes outside the parameters of the jacketed cells if needed.

We supply Teflon® stoppers with our Side-Bi-Side and Valia-Chien Cells unless glass stoppers are requested. Occasionally Teflon® stoppers are not available in a particular size and then glass stoppers are supplied.
